Seek expert advice from your therapist and an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP). Trial the equipment before making a decision.2. Consider your environment, ensuring the PWC functions well at school, home, and various activities while remaining compact enough for easy access.3. Consider your clinical needs by working closely with your therapist to ensure the equipment accommodates both current and future requirements. If uncertain about future needs, consider a hire option temporarily.4. Align your PWC choice with your goals, including school, family, and personal activities.5. Consider your seating system, ensuring comfort, support, and adaptability as you grow.6. Evaluate post-sale support, including warranty, programmed maintenance packages, and after-sale support (including breakdowns) to keep your PWC in optimal condition. This is extremely important for you and your family so you can stay mobile.7. Consider a Manual Wheelchair (MWC) with Power Add-On. Before you jump in and purchase a PWC, consider if a manual chair with a removable power assist or power-add on would better suit your needs. The Seating: With your therapist, decide what level of seating support is required to meet your postural and pressure needs.2. Power Seating Functions: The options are tilt, recline, seat elevate, foot elevate, and standing, with combinations selected based on your therapists’ assessment of your needs.3. Access: Be clear about how you are going to control the chair as this influences your choice of power base.4. The Power Base and Drive wheel position: All power wheelchair bases have their pros and cons, and you will also need to consider the motor capabilities of each model to make the best choice. It comes down to, “What do you need the chair to do? What goals are you trying to achieve?”. Remembering that a compromise is likely to be needed, so understanding what is most important to you should remain front of mind. The options include Rear Wheel Drive, Front Wheel Drive, Mid Wheel Drive and All Terrain.5. Suspension: How the suspension of the chair is achieved on the base, and how it interacts with your choice of seating, is different for every chair. Check the ride quality over the surfaces you are going to be accessing. The choice of tyre will also determine how the chair handles and where it can go.6. Astris PME offers free equipment trials (as long as a therapist is involved) and product demonstrations across NSW, ACT, QLD and VIC, which can be held at any of our clinic rooms, at your therapist’s clinic, or at another suitable location of your choice. (If you are outside these areas, feel free to talk to us for a referral to a provider in your area).

Equipment Trials

Our team is comprised of trained specialist consultants, experienced mobile service technicians, and dedicated customer service personnel. We also have back-office support in finance, marketing, systems, warehouse and production, with branches in Sydney, Newcastle, Young, Canberra, Melbourne and Brisbane.

We are proud of our long-standing relationships with many valued clients, and work closely with their therapists and organisations such as Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) and NAPA Centre.
